“There’s nothing worse than old friends…they always think they know exactly who you are.”

Mary had a son. Now her son is dead. And that is all. But Jen is having a dinner party, just like they used to, a chance to catch up. No pressure. Nothing big. Just old friends. It would be great to see you. If you’re free. If you’re ready.

Staying Alive follows Mary’s efforts to build herself a life, after his death. Is it possible to regain any sense of normalcy? If not, how will her friends support her today, a year from now, 5 years from now?

Winner of the first annual Blackshaw Showcase Award, Staying Alive was developed with support from Blackshaw, culminating in a one night industry performance at the Pleasance Theatre in January 2015. The show returned to The Pleasance for a two week run and the playscript was published by Nick Hern Books. Kat Roberts’ Staying Alive is a real success story and one that Blackshaw is immensely proud of.

Proof that given enough time, talent and perseverance, theatre that really says something about the human condition can be made.

The Blackshaw Arts Hour – Episode 40

This week on the show, Iasha brings you The Blackshaw Arts Hour minus her regular co-hosts.

Matt, Vikki and Nick review the Grand Budapest Hotel and we hear a very funny question from Helen Johnson posed to our cast and crew of Staying Alive at the beginning of the year.

Richard Stratton told us his three top spooky experiences ranging from childhood all the way though to present day, a story that featured in Blackshaw’s Scare Slam last year.

Next up on the show was Beige, a piece of new writing by Dan Weatherer, performed by Richard Malado and Hayley Marie Axe and Directed by Catherine Lord at one of our regular New Writing Nights at the Horse and Stables in Lambeth.

The Blackshaw Arts Hour – Episode 28

This week on the show Iasha is joined in the studio by Ellie and Vikki, and with Blackshaw’s current production of Staying Alive more than half way through it’s run, we have a lot to talk about.

First up is a retro film review of Spirited Away and Vikki’s Arts Thing of the Week. We’re talking about Love Theatre day and the 5 things we learnt as over 500 theatre bodies participated and answered questions on Twitter last week.

Helen Johnson provided us with some audience feedback from Staying Alive and also asked cast, crew and audience the most important question of the week; Do you ever feel like you have too many arms?

Owen Collins gave us some fresh new poetry form our last New Writing Night and we talked about being scared at the theatre in the lead up to our Scare Slam happening this coming Wednesday at the Horse and Stables in Lambeth.
