Theatre/Radio Internship with Blackshaw Theatre Company

An introduction to working in professional theatre/radio, offering the chance to shadow and assist our sound designer/engineer, director, actors and stage manager on a professional production.

You will shadow/assist in one or more of the following areas:

– foley

– sound

– directing

– theatre/radio production

You will also have a place reserved for you on our new writing workshop (Mon 28th June, 6pm, The Big Top, King George’s Park, Wandsworth).

Our interns will be fully supported throughout their time with us, and on successful completion of the internship will receive a credit in the programme, and a reference for future job applications.

Foley –

This is the creation and performance of sound effects on stage.  It’s super fun, and will be coordinated by our sound designer, Andrew Crane.  To get a taste of what we’ve done before, listen to Some Treachery: A Miss McSkimming Mystery and The Final Adventure of Frankie Fightwell.  The role could involve working with Andy to try out different ways to produce sound effects, assisting during rehearsals, and/or performing these on the day during the show.

Sound – 

We need to carefully balance the recording of foley and live voices of the actors during the performances, so you could work with our sound engineer to see how this works in practice, and assist during the get in, technical rehearsal and performance.

Directing – 

You could work with our Director, Ellie, during rehearsals and on show day; working with the writer to tweak the script, coordinating foley and sound with Andy, and getting the best possible performances from our actors.

Theatre/radio production – 

There needs to be a clear overview of the performance – coordination of venue, creatives, sales, marketing.  If you want to see what it’s like to hold all the strings, come and assist our company director, Ellie, in the production of the whole show!

Eligibility

Open to Wandsworth residents and students aged 16-25.

No previous experience required.

About the show

Following their award-winning production of The Final Adventure of Frankie Fightwell by Chris Buxey (Stage Door New Writing Award 2018), Blackshaw Theatre Company returns to the Wandsworth Arts Fringe with a radio play recorded in front of a live audience (hilarious sound effects included).

Miss McSkimming takes to the high seas in her second adventure, presented by Blackshaw Theatre.  Expecting a pleasant transatlantic cruise, Miss McSkimming must instead deal with a missing companion and a series of mysterious thefts, all whilst trying to avoid panic amongst her fellow passengers.

A rollicking comedy with mysteries abounding, this piece promises to delight audiences, young and old!

The show will run alongside a series of educational outreach events – a radio playwriting and producing workshop at the Putney Arts Theatre, a Q&A with the show creators, and 1-3 internships for Wandsworth residents and students wanting to gain experience in producing theatre and radio.

The Final Adventure of Frankie Fightwell by Chris Buxey

This radio play is a dark comedy about principles, money, and the importance of family. Stuart is a writer and creator of the beloved Young Adult literature heroine Frankie Fightwell. When Stuart’s agent delivers some bad news, Stuart soon comes to realise that there might be more than just the usual vampire sharks and giant Nazi man-spiders preventing Frankie from making it to the end of her latest adventure. But Frankie – and Stuart – aren’t going down without a fight! 

The radio play will be performed in front of a live audience, with live foley (sound effects) and aired on the Blackshaw Arts Hour on Wandsworth Radio and made available on the Blackshaw Arts Hour podcast to stream or download.

“I can see. There is the moon. Besides I’m not exactly going anywhere whilst I’m transitioning, am I?”

Lepidopterist, Dave, tries to cope with his recent breakup by transforming into a Moth. His sister, Amber, must put aside her own feelings in order to coax him from his cocoon. However, Dave and Amber will discover that not everything is as simple as Moth and Man, when a series of hidden betrayals emerge, forcing them to confront what is really happening behind the makeshift wings and all the maple syrup.

As it’s an industry showcase, and one night only, we don’t need a fully realised stage design, but aim to do a set up which is evocative of a design that one might go for if a full production was staged. We are keen to have a clear aesthetic concept, and need for the homemade moth wings to be robustly made.  They should be made out of rubbish – household items – they need to stay on when for the duration of a lot of flapping, but don’t need to actually look like moth wings.

In the script the setting is described as:A dark open plan London flat. There is a kitchen on the left hand side and a living space filling the rest of the stage.

A window allows moonlight to illuminate the space. The flat is a mess with rubbish, beer bottles and syrup everywhere. There is a large cocoon made from rubbish, duct tape and syrup in the living room. Rustling and insect sounds can be heard coming from the cocoon. After a minute footsteps are heard from outside the flat, then a man’s voice. Sound of a key turning in the lock. The cocoon falls silent.

He is covered in insect like markings, wearing dirty clothes, with wings attached to his back made out of rubbish.

All cast and creatives are welcome to invite any industry folk they want, and we have a list of people we invite (producers, venues, directors, agents), so it gives everyone great exposure and networking opportunities. Due to the nature of the budget, we have a budget of £50.

We anticipate the designer being needed in person for one meeting, and the performance day itself.

DÁITHÍ
DÁITHÍ – Male. 30s/early 40s. Good Irish accent (Donegal).

DÁITHÍ owns and runs the pub in which the majority of the play is set, along with his wife, MÁIRE. Despite noticeable tensions in their marriage, he does love his wife. He is a realist and sceptic with a dry, mocking sense of humour. Presents a hard front to the world to cover up his vulnerability.

SNIBBER
Snibber – Male. 50s/60s. Good Irish accent (Donegal).

Snibber is the ever-present fixture in the local pub, never seen without a glass of whisky in his hand. He is somewhere between a best friend and adopted father to DÁITHÍ, the pub owner. Cheery and always on the look out for something to make him chuckle.

Winner of Blackshaw’s Showcase Award 2016, CAILLEACH ÓG by Gerry Moynihan, has been in development for a year.

Myth and reality clash when a strange woman arrives in a quiet pub in the west of Ireland on a stormy November night.

Husband and wife DÁITHÍ and MÁIRE UÍ DHOMHNAILL own a pub in Bally Briocht – frequented by local barfly SNIBBER BANNON. A strange woman calling herself CAILLEACH ÓG arrives, and is soon making wild claims about being “The Mother of Mountains” as well as being “all wise and all knowing” much to the amusement of DÁITHÍ, MÁIRE and SNIBBER.

DÁITHÍ subsequently finds his fate increasingly intertwined with that of CAILLEACH ÓG. And as his life very quickly unravels beyond his control, he desperately tries to hold on to his marriage as well as his sanity.

But who exactly is this strange woman called CAILLEACH ÓG? And what really brings her to Bally Briocth?

“CAILLEACH ÓG…? She arrived on the back of a pig. What else do ye need tae know?”

Emma, who’s leaving this post for a full time job in Cardiff, reflects on her time in the role:

Blackshaw Theatre are an inspiring theatre company and I had a great time working with them over the last year and a half. They are a very welcoming and talented group of people who really made me feel part of the company from day one.

I was employed as the Press and External Communications Officer. This was my first ever job in the Arts, it really gave me an insight into the Theatre Industry. The role involves programming the social media – being ‘the voice’ of Blackshaw and contacting Press during show times.

What I loved most about this job was how involved I was. Although I ran this role from home (often in my PJs with a cuppa), the communication within Blackshaw is amazing and I was able to keep up-to-date with everything going on, and program the social media accordingly.

I wish Blackshaw all the best and I can’t wait to see what great things they do next!

Working for Blackshaw – Funding & Partnerships Manager, Nick

As Funding & Partnership Manager it is my job to search, apply and cross my fingers in hope for funding. As you can imagine, it’s not easy getting funding for arts based projects. The pots of money are getting smaller and the number of people applying to them is increasing! I also keep on the lookout for potential partnerships for our projects. Not only can this ease the burden in terms of financing a project but also it is good for us to work with new people. This role also means advising on some of our more dreary legal documents but nevertheless important to get right.

My day job is very similar. I work at the University of East London as a Research Funding Officer helping academics search and apply for funding for their research projects. This comes with a healthy dollop of project management once the grants are awarded. These skills are handy when it comes to working for Blackshaw.

Searching for funds mostly comes down to endless Googling until you find the right one, and requires a lot of reading eligibility requirements (not worth reading much else before that).

I work closely with our Strategy and Planning Manager, Vikki, AKA taskmaster general, when we collaborate on a funding application. Each application and project is ultimately overseen by Ellie, our Managing & Artistic Director (AKA arty boss). They are great to work with and even though it can get tough at times, it is ultimately satisfying getting the applications submitted and even more so when they are successful.

You don’t need to have any theatre expertise whatsoever;enthusiasm and a desire to get involved with Blackshaw is all that’s required. Vacancy: Makeup Artist

We are staging ‘Alice in Wonderland’ (adaptation by Richard Stratton) as part of the Wandsworth Arts Festival & Fringe in May (show dates below). It’s being performed at the Battersea Library (Clapham Junction), and we have a placement available for a makeup artist.

Duties will include designing and applying the makeup for the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit (and any other characters you think would benefit!) – for rehearsals and shows. You will be working alongside our top Design team, Director, and producer, who are all experienced in their fields and can offer mentoring and skill development.  

This is a great opportunity to operate as a full crew member, to gain invaluable experience in hands-on production roles, where you are supported and mentored by industry professionals.
